In 1999, Jonathan Lee moved his young family from New York City to Petoskey, Michigan. He and his wife wanted to be closer to family and everything the Great Lakes State has to offer. As Jonathan said at the time, “I want to live where I can see the sunset.”
His colleagues were puzzled. Why would he give up a successful career at a big name firm to move goodness-knows-where?
Two of his closest mates decided to investigate. After not one but two visits to Petoskey, the pair had only this to say: “We get it.”
Coming Home to Michigan
Land of the Million Dollar Sunset
Petoskey has been called the “Land of the Million Dollar Sunset” since 1873, thanks to a dazzled reporter who arrived just as the sun was sinking into Lake Michigan. On a late fall day that year, the train whistled to a stop at the new end of its line–Petoskey. On board to celebrate were the governor of Michigan, other dignitaries and a reporter for a Grand Rapids newspaper, who raved about the area’s “million dollar sunsets.”
